Should we Summon Spirits? by Thom Sanders
It’s a question that often comes up, should spirits be summoned if they don’t want to be?
For those in the know the answer is often a resounding ‘No’ as the ethics behind trying to force a spirit to do anything is questionable. If you think about it would you expect someone on the living plane to be at your beck and call all the time? Someone you can pester whenever you want to. Of course you wouldn’t; that’s harassment after all.
How does this apply to spirits? Well the journey of a living soul over into the spirit world does not change them as much as most assume. Yes they loose their physical body but the spirit, mind and soul all pass over intact, after all it’s for this reason we seek out messages from them through the agency of mediumship.
Of course some spirits are more prone to summoning than others, and the personality of the person in the real world matches that of their spirit. If a medium is trying to contact a stubborn or obstinate person they can often find their calls ignored. This also means that a summon from a medium is not guaranteed to force the spirit into doing anything; repeated summoning calls can end up making the spirit feel harassed and angered.
It’s worth mentioning at this point that a medium can’t ‘force’ a spirit to do anything, they have no supernatural powers to bend a spirit to their will. Any mediums out there who claim they can bring back a specific loved one from beyond the grave are, quite frankly, lying.
That said though, family and friends are often the ones that are easiest to contact. The spirits of close relatives are often aware of how much we love and miss them; often they will do as much as they can to make sure contact can be made if the opportunity arises.
There are a few things that the medium needs to do to make sure this connection goes as smoothly as possibly though: The medium must be able to form a strong connection to the vibrations of the Spirit World, they must avoid any negativity or disbelief in the process as that can create barriers to psychic communications and they must be well rested as depleted energy levels can make the link weaker.
So although spirits shouldn’t be summoned unless you’re sure they would want to be shouldn’t stop you from summoning at all. After all we can get valuable information from our friends in the spirit world, wisdom that they would want us to have.
